The JB Custom Fly Rod Systems

At J B Custom Rods we pride ourselves with building rods for fishermen who really fish. That’s why we use the best components and build our rods for tough use. Being saltwater fishermen and being heavily involved with the bass tournament circuit, we know what it takes to make rods that perform flawlessly and that can take day in and day out hard nosed fishing. Our fly rods reflect the hard-nosed fishing we practice. The rods in this series are built to be used in both fresh and saltwater. This is not to say they are "meat rods". These rods are truly built for practitioners of the Flyfisher’s art and are practical. We assure you they will be as effective as your fish finding skill allows and your rod will not limit your catch!

Our fly rods are building a reputation for being light, easy to cast, durable and nice to look at. J B Custom Fly Rods puts fun and finesse into fly-fishing.

Fly Rods for Real Fishermen:

The Currituck Bug Rod

Currituck Sound, Back Bay, Chesapeake Bay, Albemarle Sound, Laguna Madre and the Florida Keys all have world famous fly-fishing. Brackish water largemouth bass, speckled seatrout, weakfish, bluefish, school sized striped bass and bonefish all require a one handed fly rod that can throw a 7 to 9 weight line. The Currituck Bug Rod is built on an 9-foot graphite blank. We build two individual versions of the Currituck Bug Rod. The Currituck Bug Rod-Light is made to handle an 7-8 weight fly line and the Currituck Bug Rod-Standard is made for an 8-9 weight line. You really need both. Some days the wind can really howl out on the bays, sounds, and flats. The 9-foot length with a nine-weight line will really punch the wind with a big bug or Lefty’s Deceiver. When rigged with an eight weight it will blast a Crazy Charlie over a Bone’s nose. The other 9-foot rod is designed for a 7-8 weight line and when the conditions and flies used permit a lighter approach. This lighter Currituck Bug Rod is the rod we carry to the Quetico in Canada for big smallmouths on hair bugs. Also, this rod has seen duty on school stripers and bluefish in the high surf when they work in close for some fun. We might also mention we have even caught lake trout using a sinking tip line and weighted deer hair streamers with this rod. When armed with one or both of these rods you can handle all the above and then some. For example, do not hesitate to use the 7-8 weight rod on trout and steelhead and the 8-9 weight rod on baby tarpon and snook in the mangroves. Both Currituck Bug Rods are light and a pleasure to cast; they will not wear you out after a long day fishing. The Currituck Bug Rods feature high frame; high performance stripping guides and we offer an optional extension butt for both. When not in use the extension butt can be detached and carried in your vest pocket. We offer several exotic wood reel seat inserts and the rod finish is the same tough finish found on our saltwater rods.

If you are a flyfisher do not leave home without a brace of Currituck Bug Rods!

The Cricket Rod

We have a friend who loves to wander up small "criks" and fish for smallmouths and stream trout. He also loves fishing for "brim" (bluegills) and "punkinseeds in ponds and creeks. Typically, the "crik" smallmouths rarely exceed 12" but occasionally an old sow will show up in the 15" category. "Crik" trout typically average 8"-10" and rarely larger. Now we are talking creeks that very seldom get deeper than 4 or 5 feet and most water is measured in inches. Some creeks with beaver dam ponds can get deeper. The "brim and punkinseeds can really put a bend in your stick! Especially big tidal water shellcrackers we find down in this neck of the woods. Don’t forget the hushpuppies! Our friend wades and tosses a Letort cricket or small Dave’s hopper and literally picks apart the cover. Sometimes he uses wooly buggers, sculpin flies and Clouser minnows. When fishing for trout he switches to flies like elkhair caddis, adams, and zug bug nymphs or the same terrestrials he uses for smallmouth’s and brim. The Cricket Rod is just the ticket for this very secluded and quiet fishing. It is fairy light, short and effective. It is built on a 7-1/2 foot graphite blank and will throw a 5-6 weight line. Like all J B Custom Fly Rods it features a high frame, high performance stripping guide and the same tough finish used on our saltwater rods. We can build this rod on our favorite 7-1/2 foot blank, a 7 foot blank or 8 foot blank. The eight foot blank is an exceptional all around rod for trout fishing on more open water.Team this rod up with a light single action fly reel and stick a small box of bugs in your pocket and hit the brush! Remember to pinch down your barbs and as always treat these special fish gently.
